Chapter Fourteen

I spent the night. Of course I spent the night. I fell asleep listening to Diego’s breaths with the sweat still drying on my skin, feeling sated and tired in all the best ways. There would be time to think about it all later, after the candles had guttered out and the dusting of magic over the evening had faded with the stars.

Morning arose gradually in my awareness with the sound of low voices and an absence in the bed beside me.

“Trust me.” Claris’s voice, lightly amused.

“I...but don’t you think...”

Her laughter, muffled immediately. “I can’t believe you’re arguing with me over this after lighting every candle we had in the house last night.”

“Keep your voice down! And I know. Was it too much?”

“It appears to have worked like a charm. Just take the tray, husband, and romance your gentleman, would you please?”

“You’re insufferable.”

“I am delightful. And now I’m leaving. Goodnight! And my darling, you deserve the very best, you deserve to get back absolutely everything you offer others.”

“Oh, just give me that and go.”

The door closed on her laughter.

I pretended to be just waking up, lifting my head and squinting. “Was that Claris?”

“Ignore her. Um.” Diego was standing, apparently frozen in the act of setting a tray down. “She brought us...things. I’m not sure she’s been to sleep yet, to be honest. She’s hardly ever up this early. Is this too early? It’s probably too early, I’m sorry, we can go back to sleep.”

But I was eyeing the tray. “Is that coffee?”

“Yes? With cream and sugar in a little serving set I don’t think we’ve ever used before. Also iced cinnamon buns she must have bought, with some cookies and sliced fruit.” A line deepened in his forehead. “She must have gone to the store for this. I can’t believe...” He looked up.

And caught me openmouthed, staring at the tray. “I said to her once. To Claris. I told her—I don’t remember why—we were talking about what we looked for in people. I said I just wanted someone I could drink coffee in bed with on Sunday mornings. But how could she remember that? It was at least a year ago, probably more.”

“You’d be shocked at the things she remembers.” He picked up the tray again and brought it toward me. “Shall I pour?”

“I... I guess so.” It was one thing to be set up by a man’s wife to date him. Was it another to be brought coffee and breakfast in bed by her? Seemed like it should be, but I was finding it hard to be critical at the moment.

He handed me my coffee and slipped into bed beside me, only the tray between us. “This is so nice.”

“Yes. It’s. Um.” I took a sip to save me from finishing my thought. Except I wasn’t sure I wanted to hold it in. “This is how I imagined it. When I told Claris that. Just, I imagined sitting with someone, smelling coffee, still being naked from the night before.
